This course provides the opportunity to become confident in the use and care of the sewing machine. You will complete a wide variety of practical tasks and learn many new skills, including choosing and using commercial sewing patterns. There will be a strong practical focus with many sewing techniques and design concepts embedded into task work. You will create a pillowcase, denim pencil case with applique and a zip, make boxer shorts and embellish PJ top and create cushion covers that you have dyed in the Shibori technique.   • Making a range of simple articles designed to develop skills and techniques (eg decorative cushion cover)

  • Incorporating design and embellishment techniques into practical articles (eg dyeing, applique)

  • Working toward the production of simple garments (eg pants)

  • Choosing and using commercial patterns

  • Creating an ‘own choice’ project

Whilst supporting the development of general life skills, this course will assist those interested in working in any of a large range of career areas including:

  • Fashion (eg designing, fashion journalism, modelling, advertising);

  • Clothing/textile manufacture (eg bridal and evening wear, home décor, clothing alteration);

  • Home business (eg craft & textile manufacture for retail, market selling, dressmaking);

  • Creative pursuits (eg artistic creation, personal expression).

Assessment

Students will be assessed according to the College Assessment Policy.  They will be required to demonstrate outcomes from the Technologies Learning Area and will be assessed on a number of occasions throughout the year. A variety of assessment strategies have been implemented into the programme, including both practical and theoretical components.
