Excellence and Creativity at Seton Catholic College
At Seton Catholic College, we are committed to supporting academically and creatively talented students in reaching their full potential through a variety of in-class and extra-curricular opportunities. Our Vision for Learning reflects our aspiration to develop students' ability to apply knowledge and engage in deep learning through activities that encourage creativity and excellence, both within and beyond the classroom.
Recognising Excellence
We refer to Gagné’s (2003) definitions of excellence:
Giftedness refers to natural abilities or aptitudes significantly beyond what might be expected for one’s age in any domain.
Talent refers to achievement or performance at a level significantly beyond what might be expected at a given age.
Opportunities for Growth
Students are encouraged to participate in activities that support independent learning and allow them to explore their interests in depth.
In the Classroom:
Seton provides a challenging and extended curriculum that allows for differentiation, ensuring talented students are supported and extended in their learning.
Beyond the Classroom:
A variety of extra-curricular opportunities allow students to collaborate with like-minded peers, expert teachers, community members, and industry professionals.
Students are encouraged to engage in activities that foster innovation, creativity, and the real-world application of skills.
Identifying and Supporting Talent
Students may be identified through:
Semester Reports
Standardised Testing (MYAT, NAPLAN)
Classroom Excellence
Creative Excellence
By fostering a positive and enriching learning environment, Seton Catholic College ensures that talented students have the support and opportunities they need to thrive and develop their gifts into talents.
Seton Sparks Community
As part of Seton's Excellence and Creativity program, the Seton Sparks Community is an exciting new co-curricular program designed to support and challenge high-achieving students in Years 8 and 9. Students are invited to join based on their Year 7 academic performance and additional indicators such as AGAT testing.
This initiative aims to extend learning opportunities, foster intellectual curiosity, and develop essential skills for lifelong success. Members of the Sparks Community will:
Participate in extension activities within their core subjects to deepen understanding and encourage critical thinking.
Attend specialised workshops focused on study strategies, higher-order thinking, and key capabilities such as Agency in Learning and General Capabilities.
Connect with like-minded peers in a supportive environment that values collaboration and academic growth.
Through these experiences, the Seton Sparks Community empowers students to strive for excellence and reach their full potential.
