Design something unique and gain the skills to make it yourself!

The Year 9 Materials Design Technology course will extend students understanding of tools and machinery, and their ability to finish projects to a high standard. Students will develop their design skills and their capacity to critique and improve on current products. They will build their confidence in using machines and understand how to design projects to fit within specific guidelines.

Students will learn about the qualities of different timbers and the origins of the materials they are using, including the environmental impact of selecting sustainable materials for their projects.

The course aims to

  • Develop knowledge, skills and appreciation of quality in the design and production of practical projects.

  • Develop the ability to investigate practical solutions to problems.

  • Encourage a sense of purpose, enjoyment and personal satisfaction through the production of practical projects.

  • Develop knowledge and understanding of traditional, current and emerging technologies.

In core modules, students learn about the materials, tools, techniques and safety issues related to timber as they manufacture a variety of practical projects. This is further enhanced and developed through the study of specialised modules in Cabinetwork and Wood Machining.

Assessment

Assessments will be primarily practical and will cover various projects created in the workshop. Students will also be assessed on their ability to critique designs and come up with original ideas during the design process. Their work will be documented and reflected upon using a variety of assessment strategies over the course of the year.
