Design combines creativity, innovation, and practical problem solving to shape the world we live in. This course encourages students to think critically and creatively while developing strong visual communication and technical skills through a series of purposeful design challenges. Students explore key design practices across illustration, graphic design, 3D modelling, and spatial design. Ideas are developed through sketching, technical drawing, and computer-aided design (CAD), using both traditional methods and digital tools. Each project follows the full design process, from research and concept development to prototyping and refinement, with a focus on creating outcomes that are functional, engaging, and relevant to real-world needs.

THE COURSE AIMS TO

  • Build confidence in solving real-world problems through hands-on and digital design challenges

  • Develop the ability to generate and refine ideas using both traditional methods and emerging technologies

  • Encourage a sense of purpose, enjoyment, and pride through the creation of meaningful and practical outcomes

  • Foster a deep understanding of design's role across industries such as media, construction, marketing, product development, and user experience

  • Strengthen key capabilities in communication, innovation, and critical thinking — essential in subjects like Visual Arts, Technologies, Science, Mathematics, and Business

POSSIBLE PROJECTS INCLUDE

  • Product and industrial design using 3D printing and laser cutting

  • Architecture and interior Design

  • Graphic design and branding for print and digital media

  • Technical drawing and presentation of visual concepts

  • Computer-aided design (CAD) / Digital Drawing

ASSESSMENT

All students will be assessed on a number of occasions throughout the Semester. A variety of assessment strategies have been included in the program including both practical and theoretical components.

PATHWAY

Year 10 Design builds a strong foundation for future learning and opens pathways into senior Design courses, including both General and ATAR.
