AIM OF THE COURSE

Science in Practice General aims to develop students’ practical and analytical skills through the use of the scientific method in a variety of investigations that explore understanding of the natural and technological world. Students will apply workplace health and safety requirements and practices while working in the laboratory and in the field. Students will learn how to ask questions, draw evidence-based conclusions, communicate using accurate and appropriate terms and conventions, all while applying scientific knowledge to solve problems and make informed decisions that impact themselves and society.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Science in Practice is a hands-on, real-world science course that combines concepts from biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space sciences to help students understand how science works in everyday life. Students use practical investigations and collaborative projects, learning to apply the scientific method, analyse data, think critically, and communicate evidence-based conclusions. Ultimately, students will develop range of essential skills including problem-solving, workplace health and safety awareness, and scientific literacy.

Year 11 and 12

Students will have the option, as a cohort, to select four units to study over years 11 and 12  from the following options:

  • Forensic Science

  • Rocketry and Flight

  • Sustainability

  • Local Ecosystems

  • Local Geology

  • Acids and Bases

  • Wheels in Motion
