What is fact, and what is fiction when it comes to ‘healthy eating’?
This course is designed to help students understand what is involved in eating well, and how to overcome the issues, such as advertising, which can stand in the way of good nutrition. In this time poor life we lead prepare wholesome and healthy meals, we need to manage the way we source, prepare and cook our food.
Students will have the opportunity to investigate individual nutritional needs and then plan, prepare and serve healthy foods to suit. You will develop a variety of practical food preparation skills by creating your own Stir fries, cooking Pizzas including the bread base, preparing Salads, heart-warming soups with fresh bread rolls, and your very own Muffins (your recipe)

‘Nutrition Information’ – what is fact, what is fiction and/or marketing hype?
Nutrition relevant to adolescent development – especially the importance of calcium and fibre.
Making individual food choices
Keeping and analysing a food diary.
Planning, preparing and serving meals to a specific nutrition brief.
Working co-operatively with others, safely and efficiently.
Whilst supporting the development of general life skills, this course will assist those interested in working in any of a large range of career areas including:
Nutrition and Health (eg Sports Dietitian, Health Promotion Officer, Personal Trainer);
Food Science (eg Food Technologist, Home Economist, Advertising);
Hospitality (eg chef, café manager, catering);
Travel/Tourism (eg, flight attendant, event co-ordinator, tour Leader).
Assessment
Students will be assessed according to the College Assessment Procedure. They will be required to demonstrate outcomes from the Technologies Learning Area and will be assessed on a number of occasions throughout the year. A variety of assessment strategies have been implemented into the programme, including both practical and theoretical components. A more comprehensive assessment breakdown can be obtained from the Technologies Faculty staff.
