You will have the chance to understand more about the development of children from birth to the age of 6. You will learn about the pregnancy, birth, responsibilities of parenthood and care of a child as well as experiencing “parenting” with the “Baby Think It Over” simulators. We will also discuss current issues related to families and sustainable living in our rapidly changing society. There will be an emphasis on practical activities, including designing and making toys and other items for children.

Whilst supporting the development of general life skills, this course will assist those interested in working in any of a large range of career areas including:
Health (eg nursing, counselling, working with the disabled);
Education (eg teacher, education support assistant, childcare provider);
Childcare (eg childcare, babysitting, nanny/au pair);
Future parenting (many or most students will become parents in the future.)
Assessment
Students will be assessed according to the College Assessment Policy. They will be required to demonstrate outcomes from the Technologies Learning Area and will be assessed on a number of occasions throughout the year. A variety of assessment strategies have been implemented into the programme, including both practical and theoretical components. A more comprehensive assessment breakdown can be obtained from the Technologies Faculty staff.
