We aim for you to build on your existing knowledge, skills and understanding of concepts relating to designing and producing food products. You will have the opportunity to investigate and make judgements on how the 8 of food safety, preservation, preparation, presentation and sensory perceptions influence the ways in which people use food. Among the list of planned activities is to design and create a dish suitable to be sold at a food truck, MasterChef challenges and visit a local restaurant for a three-course lunch.

Whilst supporting the development of general life skills, this course will assist those interested in working in any of a large range of career areas including:

  • Nutrition and Health (eg sports dietitian, health promotion officer, personal trainer);

  • Food Science (eg food technologist, home economist, advertising);

  • Hospitality (eg chef, café manager, catering);

  • Travel/Tourism (eg, flight attendant, event co-ordinator, tour leader).

Assessment

Students will be assessed according to the College Assessment Policy.  They will be required to demonstrate outcomes from the Technologies Learning Area and will be assessed on a number of occasions throughout the year. A variety of assessment strategies have been implemented into the programme, including both practical and theoretical components. A more comprehensive assessment breakdown can be obtained from the Technologies Faculty staff.

Pathway

This subject will be an obvious advantage, but not a prerequisite, for any student wishing to study the course Food Science and Technology or Hospitality Certificate II in Years 11 and 12.
