Course Outline

The Drama course offers students excitement, knowledge, skills, techniques, conventions and processes as they explore key historical styles of theatre through both original play building and scripted performance. The emphasis is on practical, experiential tasks through which relevant and appropriate theory and history will be learnt.

Creativity is encouraged at all times. Critical thinking, problem solving, reflection and evaluation are integrated into all activities.. Innovative technologies are practised through the use of lighting, sound, audio-visual components as well as scenography.

The Drama class is a place where students are able to take risks and challenge their learning skills knowing that they are in a supportive, safe environment that nurtures and develops the whole person.

Students will be provided with many opportunities to attend performances at various professional theatres in Perth and also will attend in-school performances.

This course gives students many opportunities to develop skills in the areas of lighting, sound mixing operation (rigging, maintenance and operation), set design and construction, publicity (poster and ticket design), direction, costume and make-up, as well as acting, singing and dance.

Assessment

Students will be assessed in a range of ways including written journal/portfolio, oral performances and in practical workshops in order to fulfil the course content. A Year 10 Production in front of a live audience will showcase the students' skills and knowledge of the course. Students will be expected to attend all rehearsals as part of their assessment, as they take on either technical or production roles.

Students with skills in Dance, Singing, Music, Acting, Art, Computing and Technical areas, such as lighting and sound, are all encouraged to choose this course.

Pathway

This course is an excellent introduction to ATAR Drama or a for morel ‘hands on’ approach, students can choose to study the Certificate II in Live Production and Services in Year 11. This is a wonderful introduction for those wanting to study event management, lighting, sound and costume/make up design)
