Ward

Ward House is named in honour of Mary Ward, the founder of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin, commonly known as the Loreto Sisters. Mary Ward led a group of dedicated young women across Europe, establishing schools for the disadvantaged and vulnerable. Her visionary approach advocated for her religious order to be independent, living and serving within the community rather than within a monastery. Despite facing numerous challenges, Mary Ward remained steadfast in her mission to provide education and care for marginalized women and children. The theme of Ward House is Justice, echoing Mary Ward's words, "Be seekers of truth and doers of justice." The Ward House Cross, derived from the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cross, symbolizes their shared heritage. Additionally, the symbol of Ward House, the York Rose, honours Mary Ward's birthplace in Yorkshire and its historical significance in the Catholic faith in England.
